Russia’s Ethnic Groups by Population | 1926–2026 Explore 100 years of demographic change in Russia through an animated bar chart race showing the population of major ethnic groups from 1926 to 2026. This visualization follows Russians, Tatars, Ukrainians, Bashkirs, Chuvash, Mordvins, Chechens, Armenians, Avars, Belarusians, Germans, Udmurts, Mari, Kazakhs, Dargins, Ossetians, Kabardins, Buryats, Lezgins, Ingush, Yakuts (Sakha), Azerbaijanis, Kumyks, Tuvans, Uzbeks, Tajiks, Karachays, Kalmyks, Laks, Jews and other communities that have shaped Russia’s demographic history. The timeline is anchored to major Soviet and Russian population censuses. Historical census data are available for 1926, 1939, 1959, 1970, 1979, 1989, 2002 and 2010, while the latest official ethnic-composition benchmark comes from Russia’s 2020 All-Russian Population Census, which was conducted with a reference date of October 1, 2021. Демоскоп The reconstruction also reflects major historical demographic disruptions, including the 1932–1934 famine, World War II, wartime population losses, forced deportations of several ethnic communities, post-war recovery, Soviet-era internal migration and post-Soviet demographic change. Academic demographic research estimates approximately 3.32 million excess deaths in the RSFSR during the 1932–1934 famine, although losses varied greatly by region. DOI Rosstat estimates that the RSFSR population fell from about 110.99 million at the beginning of 1941 to 97.55 million at the beginning of 1946. Российская Статистика The 1940s reconstruction also takes account of major deportations. Chechens and Ingush were deported in 1944, while Kalmyks and several other North Caucasus peoples experienced forced resettlement during the war period. Sciences Po Important methodology note: Russia does not publish official annual ethnic-population counts for every year in this timeline. Values between census benchmarks are reconstructed estimates designed for historical visualization. The 2026 ethnic-group values are modeled projections rather than official census figures. Census definitions, ethnic classifications and territorial boundaries also changed over time, so long-term comparisons should be interpreted with care. Demoscope’s historical series explicitly notes changes in census classifications and that historical figures refer to the borders applicable in the respective years. Демоскоп This visualization is intended for educational and historical demographic comparison.
