Lost in Yonkers (1993) ➤ Review (GR)

The USA, the town of Yonkers near New York. The Second World War is underway. Dad brings his two sons, Yakov and Arthur, to see their grandmother: his wife has died, and he’ll have to travel a lot for work. The grandmother, a Jewish woman from Germany whom even her own son, the gangster Lou, calls an “iron woman,” is indeed very strict, and the grandsons fear and hate her. She terrorizes her daughter — a foolish woman who’s in love with an equally stupid cinema ticket seller — her grandsons, and anyone else she can get her hands on. But something tells me she’s not as mean as she seems. It’s just that her life, obviously, hasn’t been easy. Uncle Lou is in serious trouble with the mafia, and he’s hiding out in his grandmother’s house. He’s become friends with some boys who have only one dream — to get nine thousand dollars so their father can pay the doctors who treated their late mother...
