Over the next generations, climate change outcomes will be the greatest threat to the national security of states, and in the end, states will have to act, Anatol Lieven, professor, Georgetown University in Qatar, argues. Fighting climate change will inevitably need sacrifices. According to the expert, “the only ideology that can demand real sacrifices from the population is nationalism, so we need strong national states with strong nationalist feeling. Only they will have the legitimacy to do that,” he concludes.
