Russia (Russian: Россия, Rossiya, [rɐˈsʲijə]), or the Russian Federation,[c] is a transcontinental country spanning Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. It is the largest country in the world, covering over 17,098,246 square kilometres (6,601,670 sq mi), and encompassing one-eighth of Earth's inhabitable landmass. Russia extends across eleven time zones and shares land boundaries with fourteen countries,[16] more than any other country but China.[d] It is the world's ninth-most populous country and Europe's most populous country, with a population of 146 million people. The country's capital and largest city is Moscow, the largest city entirely within Europe. Saint Petersburg is Russia's cultural centre and second-largest city. Other major urban areas include Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, and Kazan.
Russian Winter, sometimes personified as "General Frost"[1] or "General Winter",[2] is an aspect of the climate of Russia that has contributed to military failures of several invasions of Russia. Mud is a related contributing factor that impairs military maneuvering in Russia and elsewhere, and is sometimes personified as "General Mud".[3][4] Russians call those muddy conditions rasputitsa, which occur with autumnal rains and spring thaws in Russia and make transport over unimproved roads difficult.
History of Yaroslavl
11th Century
Foundation of Yaroslavl
Although there is archaeological evidence of Viking settlements dating from the 8th or 9th centuries in the area of modern day Yaroslavl, the city is officially considered to have been founded by Prince Yaroslav the Wise in 1010, making it the first Russian city on the Volga. This is based on the fact that it is known from chronicles that the city was founded by Yaroslav the Wise when he was prince of Rostov Veliky where he reigned from 988 to 1010. The city was founded on the cape known as the Strelka where the River Kotorosl flows into the Volga. Yaroslav founded his new city on the site of Medvezhy Ugol (Bear's Corner), a settlement of a pagan Finno-Ugric people.
Preceded by Viking sites such as Timerevo from the 8th or 9th centuries, the city of Yaroslavl is said to have been founded in 1010 by Yaroslav the Wise as an outpost of the Principality of Rostov Veliky, and was first mentioned in 1071.[citation needed] Capital of an independent Principality of Yaroslavl from 1218, it was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Moscow in 1463.
In the 17th century, it was Russia's second-largest city, and for a time (during the Polish occupation of Moscow in 1612), the country's de facto capital. Today, Yaroslavl is an important industrial center (petrochemical plant, tire manufacturing plant, diesel engines plant and many others). It developed at the confluence of major rivers, which were important for transportation and, later, for power. Because of the city's importance, several major railways and later highways were constructed to intersect here.

On the grounds of the 12th-century Spaso-Preobrazhensky (Savior Transfiguration) Monastery, the golden-domed Transfiguration Church has 16th-century frescoes. Collections at the Yaroslavl Museum-Reserve include 16th- to 18th-century icons. Multicolored glazed tiles cover the Church of the Epiphany’s exterior. @12KtripZ
